Podiatric Education & Training

Podiatrists receive education and training that is comparable to their MD and DO peers. To become a podiatrist, you must first receive your Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree from one of the nine colleges of podiatric medicine. This is a separate educational pathway from medical school, though candidates still follow a pre-med track in undergrad and take the MCAT. Because of the highly-specialized training, class sizes are typically smaller and you receive a lot of support from your peers!

The colleges of podiatric medicine are:

Arizona College of Podiatric Medicine at Midwestern University

Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis starting the first Wednesday in August for fall admission of the following year.  For priority consideration, submit your application by March first of each year for upcoming fall admission.  The application deadline is June 30th  of each year for the fall admission of the same year.

Requirements to be accepted include:

  • Average MCAT score of 494
  • Average cumulative GPA of 3.3 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Average science GPA of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • 8 semester hours in the following science courses –
    • Biology
    • Chemistry
    • Organic Chemistry
    • Physics
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • Personal interview

The science courses you take should be those designed for health professional students (pre-medical students), and must include laboratory experience. Courses for non-science majors are not accepted.

Upon receiving your DPM degree, you will go on to complete a three-year, hospital-based residency.  On average, 99% of graduating podiatry students are successfully placed in a residency program!
